    After seeing Andrus's comment, I should clarify that our apps run within
    a single app server. They do not yet have the scalability and security
    requirements that we need to pass DataObjects between servers.
    (Similarly, we didn't use remote references to EJBs.) For such apps,
    EJBs were way too much work.
