    An alternative would be to link to the news announcement for each release.
    This would only go so far back, though.

    As for trunk / tag release notes, I guess I don't feel strongly one way or
    another. The only problem being that the unreleased version is the topmost,
    which could be confusing. This also wouldn't work well for the 1.2/2.0
    branches, since the trunk release notes really only include 3.0 items.

    I think what would be best would be if we had a way to generate them right
    out of JIRA. I looked at doing this last summer, IIRC, and it wasn't going
    to be easy to retroactively do it. I think I would have had to reopen all
    issues and then reclose them. If we were to get all this going properly
    though, it would also help with roadmapping. It just seemed harder than it
    should be though *shrug*
