Examples, Lacking?

Are there more examples somewhere? The closest thing I can find is that
article at TheServerSide.com. I found a few examples in the download, but
they are way miscellaneous from a newbies point of view. I need examples
of simple things like making queries etc. I've started out with the manual
and API, but its not incredibly easy. I get errors like java.lang.ExceptionInInitializerError
and I got no clue what is going on. This is extremely frustrating and I'm starting
to feel like an idiot.
