Sorry for the wild goose chase, everyone and thanks for the effort, but
I discovered it was an "are you sure you plugged it in?"-problem: the
query ran so fast from the admin inteface because I was looking at the
wrong database copy and the application was looking at the right one. :(
Once more, sorry for bothering and thanks.
