Yeah, a dialog reporting the permissions problem would be nice. Maybe
you can e-mail them the issue and they'll add it. The tool was probably
ported from a Windows code base where permissions are usually much
looser (to put it mildly).

Yup, that's exactly what it was.

Indeed, but it can be a stumbling block for a tired brain that
forgets to check the underlying permissions.
It might be nicer if the software popped up a "you don't have
permission to change this" message.
