    Troy,

Holger answered your question already. Here I am just repeating what he
    said.

Currently unreleased Beta1 of Cayenne (release is coming mid April)
works just fine with CLOBs, handling them as Strings on Java side. To
use this feature, you will need to upgrade from 1.0a6 that you probably
have to one of the nightly builds accessible from Cayenne website:

         http://objectstyle.org/downloads/cayenne/nightly/?M=D

With this there is no need to tweak anything - just map your
DbAttribute as CLOB and Java ObjAttribute as String, this is it.
