Time for me to be a jerk, again.

If you are truly new to maven, the book isn't going to help you much. It's
a start, but I found the only way I was able to get much of anything done
was to join the user list and post questions there.

There was recently a thread on the user list about how the book is not all
that great. Going beyond the constant back-patting and typographical
errors, it seems to lack cohesion. It reads almost like a cookbook, but is
intended for beginners. Anyway, the authors have promised to take user
feedback into consideration for the next revision. I just wouldn't expect
to be a maven guru after reading this is all.

FWIW, the authors are on the user list and are generally quite helpful.
