I think this is a bug in the modeler with the version you are using.
Are you using the latest milestone build?
I noticed this a while back when trying to create a relationship from
an entity to itself. The checkbox to update the reverse relationship
was disabled.
Long story short, what you are trying to do is completely acceptable.
FYI, if you can't upgrade for some reason, you can still update this
reverse relationship by hand.
