This is/was due to the fact that the posgresql JDBC driver cannot
handle LONGVARBINARY columns. There was an issue simply changing
types.xml to VARBINARY for Blob columns, although I don't remember what
it was :-(
Once the driver is fixed, we can take out the workaround.
